Hewlett-Packard To Kill Windows Tablet Project

http://www.latheofdreams.com/blogImages/HP-TabletPC-1.jpgThe device was first unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at CES 2010 in January and was supposed to hit the market in mid 2010. But our source tells us that HP is not satisfied with Windows 7 as a tablet operating system and has terminated the project.

HP may also be abandoning Intel-based hardware for its slate lineup simply because it’s too power hungry. That would also rule out Windows 7 as an operating system.  So what will HP use as an operating system? Look for Google-powered devices, which have already been announced.  Tech Crunch

Hewlett-Packard doesn’t want Apple to have all the fun when it comes to tablet-style computing devices.

HP said Tuesday it’s readying a Windows 7-powered slate PC that it claims will offer a more complete computing experience than Apple’s iPad.

“With this slate product, you’re getting a full Web browsing experience in the palm of your hand,” said Phil McKinney, HP’s VP and chief technical officer for its Personal Systems Group, in a blog post. “No watered down Internet, no sacrifices,” wrote McKinney.

HP demo involved reading a book using Kindle software. Using the touchscreen, he swiped through the pages, then went onto Amazon, where he purchased and downloaded another e-book. He also started playing a video, though the conference room’s impressive AV system took over quickly. The Times said the tablet would have multi-touch capabilities, but I didn’t see any evidence of that in the demo. Also as predicted, the HP slate did not resemble the Courier project whose photos were leaked last year.  NY Times
