Sex on TV: It’s increasingly uncut — and unavoidable

Spartacus: Blood and Sand: Lucy Lawless stars as Lucretia in Starz's sexually explicit new series, set during the Roman Empire. Viewers are about to see full-frontal male nudity, heterosexual, homosexual and group sex, and graphic scenes rarely — if ever — seen on mainstream TV. “You need to get eyeballs. You need to be loud,” says Spike programming chief Kevin Kay, who is pairing Blue Mountain with reruns of HBO’s sex-centric Entourage. “Our viewers are experiencing content on other cable channels or the Web. Movies and video games are going after this audience, too.”   USA Today

I am to ready to help push the widow as far as it will go. I am another film professional that is all for more sex on broadcast and cable television. Sex is one thing all people do, and we all have an interest in it, even if we don’t want to admit it.

Without sex, life itself would be impossible. Let’s drop the puritanical outrage shall we? From what I’ve seen of shows like “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” the nudity and sexual situations are perfectly in line with life in the ancient empire of Rome. I applaud the producers for being so matter of fact with it instead of trying to cover the “naughty bits” with parts of the set. Time to grow up America, people have sex, get used to it.

The sex and grotesque violence is exactly what turned me away from that show. Hollywood’s unapologetic exploitation of sex and violence turns interesting and admirable stories into a sick and twisted bucket of porn. You want a good HBO show? Check out Band of Brothers. Those guys are real American heroes. The Pacific, about the WW2 war in the pacific is slotted to air this month. I’m looking forward to that!

We seem to be forgetting that the whole purpose of TV programming is to hold your attention between commercials. Porn is the #2 highest grossing business on the net. Therefor, it is a well tested interest-holder. Don’t like it? Read a book.
